New HALL OF FAME members announced!

George Mason Athletic Hall Of Fame Committee

            Announces 2012 Elections

The George Mason Athletic Hall of Fame Committee has elected one athlete and recognized one team for a special achievement award as the Hall of Fame’s Class of 2012.  This class will be honored, along with a Class of 2013 to be elected early in the New Year, at ceremonies to be held in the fall of 2013.

The individual athletes and the special achievement award team in the Hall of Fame Class of 2012 are shown below with graduation date and competition year:

Travis Greene (2006) was an exemplary three sport athlete excelling in football, basketball, and track and field.  In basketball, he was twice named to the all district second team.  In track and field, he won the 2005 Group A state championship in the long jump, was a member of the 2006 Group A state champion 1,600 meter relay team, and was named district and regional runner of the year in 2006.  In football, Travis rushed for over 3,000 yards and scored 38 touchdowns in his career, winning numerous district, regional, and state honors, including first team all state recognition as a defensive back and return specialist his senior year.  In college, Travis was a four year letter winner at Elon University (Division I-AA), playing special teams, defensive back, and linebacker.  He later served as an assistant coach and operations intern for the Arizona Rattlers in the Arena Football League and is currently the assistant football coach for cornerbacks at Morrisville State College in New York.

The 1962 baseball team played in an era prior to regional and state play-offs and championships but had one of the most impressive seasons in school history, compiling a 12-2 record.  Anchored by Charter Hall of Fame players John Carlo (1962) and Don Roth (1963), the team featured star pitcher Charlie Albright who was 10-2 and threw four of the team’s five shutouts, including one against the George Washington University freshman team.  The team’s only losses were both 1-0 games where the opposition won on unearned runs.  For the year, the Mustangs’ 1962 baseball team outscored its opponents 122 to 23.  Along with the 1961 team, the 1962 baseball team accounted for 17 straight wins -- the longest win streak in school history for baseball.  In addition, the 1960, 1961, and 1962 baseball teams combined for 32 straight wins against schools in the same size classification, another school record in baseball.

The Hall of Fame Committee will soon consider nominees for a Class of 2013, and interested individuals are encouraged to submit nominations for individual athletes, teams, coaches, administrators, friends of the program, or those meriting special achievement awards.  The nomination form and instructions may be found at http://www.masonathletics.org/index.cfm?action=main.alumnitr.
