Alumni and Hall of Fame GO MUSTANGS!

GMHS Athletic Hall of Fame.

The objective of the George Mason High School Athletic Hall of Fame (HOF) is to recognize and honor:

  • Male and female athletes who have had outstanding athletic careers while at George Mason High School

  • Athletic teams that have compiled distinguished records and achievements for George Mason High School

  • Athletic coaches and athletic administrators who have rendered exemplary service to George Mason High School athletics

  • Individuals who have performed extraordinary and meritorious work in support of George Mason High School athletic programs

The HOF is sponsored by the GMHS Alumni Association, the GMHS Athletic Department, and the GMHS Athletic Boosters Association. The HOF is governed by a Hall of Fame Committee composed of nine members--three each from the sponsoring organizations--in accordance with the HOF Constitution and Bylaws. The committee's primary responsibilities are to (1) find, review, and select nominees for induction into the HOF, (2) plan and hold induction ceremonies and related events, and (3) provide permanent and virtual homes for the HOF. The committee meets at least once yearly to consider nominations, which can be made by anyone on the nomination form.

The HOF was initiated in the early 1990's by the GMHS Alumni Association and the GMHS Athletic Department. The charter HOF class was inducted in 1993 with members selected from four decades of Mason athletics since the school's establishment in 1952. The second class was inducted in 1995. The third class was inducted in 2006 and the fourth class, which was selected in 2006, was inducted September 29, 2007. (See Hall Member Bio's below)

Permanent HOF Home

A permanent Hall of Fame display was created through a joint effort of the Boosters, Alumni Association, and the Athletic Department. Joel Hamme of the Boosters and Scott Sager of the Alumni Association chaired the effort and worked closely with GMHS athletic director Tom Horn to bring this long-discussed project to reality. The first HOF display case was installed in 2005. Assistance was provided by many alumni and former athletic directors and coaches. A second display case was installed in 2006. Both displays are located outside the entrance to the Mustang Gym in the Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School. They contain plaques for each HOF member and lists of GMHS team championships at district, region, and state levels. Len Singer, a local cabinet maker and former Booster, fabricated the mounts and painstakingly installed HOF plaques giving many hours of labor on a pro bono basis. To him the Boosters, Alumni Association, and Athletic Department are deeply grateful.

The Boosters, Alumni Association, and Athletic Department congratulate and thank Joel and Scott for their leadership and hard work for this achievement. Many hours were spent researching yearbooks, inventorying trophies and plaques, calling alumni and former ADs and coaches, and designing the various displays.

Support the Hall of Fame

The GMHS Athletic Hall of Fame is jointly sponsored by GMHS, the GMHS Alumni Association, and the GMHS Athletic Boosters. The Hall of Fame depends solely on private funds for its expenses for display cases, plaques, mailings, and induction ceremonies. Tax-deductible contributions payable to the GMHS Athletic Boosters will help us to maintain the Hall and are very much appreciated. Send checks to Joel Hamme, 902 Lanier Place, Falls Church, VA 22046.
